From data to running simulation in one day

Bring in your GIS, review and clean the network, and run a simulation you can trust. Model building in epanet-js takes hours, not weeks.

The slow part of modeling isn't the analysis. It's building the network

Most projects stall before the first simulation ever runs. Source data is usually scattered across GIS layers, CAD files, spreadsheets, and asset registers, leaving you to clean, snap, and stitch it all together manually.

epanet-js automates that prep work. It snaps incoming geometry, assigns node elevations automatically, and flags errors or missing attributes in a clear review tool rather than forcing you to hunt them down. You keep your standard engineering workflow, but get to a running model in hours instead of days.

Get started quickly with your GIS data

Your network already lives in GIS or CAD. epanet-js reads Shapefiles, GeoJSON, and CAD files directly, with more formats on the way, and builds the model straight from your source layers. Pipes and nodes inherit their geometry and attributes on import, connecting and snapping as they load so you have a functional network on the map within minutes.

Size isn't a barrier. Whether your network is a few hundred pipes or several hundred thousand junctions, it opens, edits, and runs smoothly.

Allocate demand directly from customer meters

A network model needs accurate demand allocation to be useful. Import your customer meter points and epanet-js connects each one to the nearest or designated junction, showing the exact association on screen.

Customer attributes carry over to every point, making it easy to see customer classes and where demand enters the system. Because demand is tracked down to the individual meter, you can run high-level network overviews or model all the way down to a single connection.

Intuitive tools to draw and edit your network

Whether you are laying out new mains or adjusting imported geometry, the drawing tools make network editing direct and precise. Draw directly over satellite or street imagery with active snapping:

  • Direct placement: click to place pipes, junctions, pumps, and valves directly onto the map with automatic snapping to nearby assets.
  • Auto-split lines: dropping a junction, pipe, pump, or valve along an existing pipe splits the line automatically.
  • Node merging: drag one node onto another to merge them while preserving all connected pipe relationships.
  • Quick type swapping: switch element types, such as changing a junction to a tank, with a single click.

Network adjustments that used to require manual workarounds take seconds, keeping editing fast and intuitive.

Accurate ground levels from your terrain data

Load your digital elevation models directly from GeoTIFF files and prioritize multiple data sources into a single stack, placing high-resolution LiDAR or site surveys on top and regional data underneath. epanet-js samples the best available surface for every node, and allows you to set custom vertical offsets per layer. Large datasets over 10 GB stream directly from disk without slowing down the workspace.

If local terrain files aren't available, every placed node automatically samples elevation from a built-in global terrain dataset. You can also disable the global source to rely strictly on your own survey data.

Network Review catches errors before you simulate

Most model-building time is lost diagnosing failed simulation runs caused by disconnected lines or bad data. The Network Review panel checks your topology and attributes upfront, presenting issues as an actionable checklist with a live counter:

  • Orphan assets: highlights junctions, valves, or tanks with no connected pipes. Click to zoom directly to the asset to snap or delete it.
  • Proximity checks: detects overshoots and undershoots in imported GIS data. Adjust the search radius to surface potential gaps.
  • Crossing pipes: flags pipe intersections lacking a junction so you can decide where connections should occur.
  • Connectivity tracing: highlights isolated subnetworks to help identify accidental disconnections before running simulations.
  • Attribute validation: audits asset data against engine requirements, flagging missing elevations, invalid pump curves, out-of-range tank levels, undefined pipe diameters or roughness, unassigned valve settings, and unlinked customer meters.

Trace flow paths and zone boundaries

Once your network is connected, tracing tools let you verify the system's structure before you rely on simulation results. Trace upstream or downstream from any asset to inspect supply paths and see exactly which customers or junctions depend on a given line.

To verify pressure zones or DMAs, boundary tracing expands across the network and halts at control valves, check valves, or closed assets, making it easy to confirm your hydraulic boundaries and catch unintended cross-connections.

Simulate with the trusted EPANET 2.3 engine

Run simulations and get results back in seconds, with native support for pressure-dependent demands, FAVAD leakage, emitters, and MSX water quality. Pressures, flows, and velocities are colored dynamically across the map so you can evaluate performance at a glance.

All simulations run and save locally on your machine. No project data is ever sent to our servers, so your models stay fast, private, and entirely under your control.

What model building gives you

Hours, not weeks

A complete, connected, running model in an afternoon, built from data that used to take a project to assemble.

Any data, any size

Shapefile, GeoJSON, CAD, and EPANET .inp today, on networks from a few hundred pipes to several hundred thousand junctions.

Accurate from the start

Layer your own survey or LiDAR GeoTIFFs for ground levels, with a worldwide elevation source built in as a fallback.

A model you can defend

The Network Review checks topology, connectivity, and asset attributes, so you know what is connected and what has been verified before you run.

Build your first model today

Launch epanet-js, bring in your GIS, and run a simulation in minutes. Nothing to install.

Model building is just the foundation

Getting the network on the map is only the first step. epanet-js keeps the rest of your workflow in the same workspace, moving straight from GIS import into customer demand loading, field calibration, and scenario analysis without jumping between spreadsheets or third-party tools.

Where to next

Once your model is built, keep going.

Frequently asked questions

The questions teams ask most about building a model in epanet-js.

What file formats can I import?
Shapefile, GeoJSON, and CAD, plus any EPANET .inp file from version 2.3 back through earlier releases, and customer points from your spatial data. Models built in InfoWater Pro, WaterCAD, WaterGEMS, or InfoWorks WS Pro open directly, scenarios and custom attributes included — see model import.
Is there a limit on how large my network can be?
There is no practical ceiling. Networks from a few hundred pipes up to several hundred thousand junctions open, edit, and run.
Where do node elevations come from?
Load your own digital terrain data from GeoTIFF files and layer several sources in priority order, with high-resolution survey or LiDAR data on top. There is no practical file-size limit — we have tested with GeoTIFFs over 10 GB. Where you have limited data availability, every node still picks up a ground level automatically from a worldwide elevation source, anywhere on earth.
Do I have to clean my data before I import it?
No. epanet-js does the connection and snapping work as the data comes in, then the Network Review panel guides you through anything that needs a human decision: orphaned assets, near-miss connections, crossing pipes, and disconnected subnetworks. It also validates the attributes on every asset, from missing elevations to pump curves that don't make sense.
Can I add demand from my customer or meter data?
Yes. Bring in your customer points and each one is connected to the network automatically, with its demand applied at the correct downstream junction. Demand is represented back to the individual meter, so you can see where consumption comes from. See the guide to importing customer points.
Can I draw a network from scratch?
Yes. Trace or draw your network over satellite or street imagery, which is especially useful when you're sketching out a preliminary idea. The drawing tools keep everything connected as you go, so a blank map becomes a runnable model quickly.
Which engine does it run?
The trusted EPANET 2.3 engine, including pressure-dependent demands, FAVAD leakage, emitters, and MSX water quality. Simulations run entirely on your machine.
Do I need to install anything?
No. epanet-js runs in any modern browser on Mac, Windows, and Linux. There is nothing to install and nothing for IT to approve.
